For the most part yes. Unless otherwise indicated, our rings are made from US or foreign coins that were in circulation. Some rings may be made from uncirculated or proof coins. We also make rings from mint “rounds” or challenge coins that are not regular coins.

Most coins still in circulation are nickel clad copper or a copper nickel alloy. Depending on skin oil, sweat, and PH some people do react to copper, brass, and similar jewelry items causing a harmless discoloration if worn constantly or for extended periods. Even silver and gold jewelry can cause the same reaction but is very rare. The metal content of  each ring is listed in its description.

Federal law says it is illegal to deface coins for “fraudulent“ purposes, meaning trying to represent the item as something other than what it has become, or trying to say a nickel is now a quarter, or attempting to change the date or mint mark to misrepresent value. A coin ring was a coin that is now a ring, not a piece of currency with the value of that currency. As an example think of the penny smashing machine at tourist locations that makes a penny a into keepsake, it’s no longer a penny.

The answer is "it depends". On a rare occasion a coin can fail in the folding process required to fashion it into a ring. We recommend not using a sentimental coin to create a ring unless the client is well aware of the risks and is willing to accept them. We discourage the use of coins that have collector or historical value however, since it's the client's coin, and as long as they understand they are affecting the coins collector value, we will attempt to accommodate. 

Any jewelry cleaner, polish, or polishing cloth can be used to clean and polish a coin ring.
